How To Overcome Psychological Trauma (5 Ways)

Most of us learn beautifully through hearing someone else’s story of alchemizing pain into victory. So, here’s my story that includes 5 ways in which you can begin to heal and move on from the trauma you may be navigating.

HOW I OVERCAME PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA -

Psychological trauma is a type of emotional injury that occurs as a result of a highly distressing or disturbing event. In my case, I was psychologically abused by a stalker to the point where I had to move across the country.. (we keep it real over here LOL). My prayer is that by sharing what helped me navigate that immense difficulty, you’ll be able to make it to the other side too! And someday even look back on the circumstance with a deep understanding of why it unfolded from a place of peace. It can be difficult to overcome psychological trauma, but there are absolutely steps you can take to heal and truly move forward! I made it to the other side and so can you. Dare I say - I can even laugh about it. Life is weird! So, here’s what I did:

  1. Perhaps the most obvious (hopefully!) - I got far far away from the threat. In my case I literally moved across the country. If you are being abused or threatened in any way - there is freedom on the other side of this! There is a safe space. Make a plan to leave and ask for help.

  1. I sought support and was honest with my friends and family about the stress I was undergoing and allowed them to give me support without feeling guilty. I opened up my heart and mind to be cared for and trusted that they were happy to be there for me.

  2. Prioritized feelings of safety and intentionally created safe environments for myself internally and externally. I would literally stop in the middle of something to give myself a hug, a nap or a snack. I took long bubble baths, made nourishing meals, took gentle walks.

  3. I did EFT for safety and wellbeing at least once a week. I should have done it every day. I give EFT 90% of the credit for making it through intrusive thoughts about what I had experienced.

  4. I sought professional help. In my case, it was working with my wonderful Reiki Master and a Diviner who integrated shamanism for karmic and soul-level healing.

Remember that healing from trauma takes time, and it is important to be patient with yourself and practice self-compassion. It is also important to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

GENERAL TIPS FOR RELIEVING ANXIETY -

  • Practicing relaxation techniques: Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation can help reduce anxiety symptoms. I would often (and still do) just lie down in savasana to ground my energy and practice ‘active stillness’. Taking long baths and being near water were also high on my list.

  • Exercising regularly: As we know, exercise helps to reduce stress and improve our mood, which can in turn reduce anxiety. Something as simple as a short walk or a gentle stretch can help so much.

  • Getting enough sleep: Poor sleep can contribute to anxiety, so it is important to prioritize getting enough rest. Consider taking 10-15 minute naps during the day! You’ll be amazed.

  • Limiting caffeine and alcohol: Both caffeine and alcohol can increase anxiety, so it may be helpful to limit these substances. Tune into what your body is trying to communicate with you.

  • Eating a healthy diet: A healthy diet has so much to do with our mental wellbeing. The gut and mind connection has been studied far and wide which gives us a deeper understanding of how important it is to prioritize great nutrition.

  • Trying natural remedies: Many of us find relief from anxiety with natural remedies such as herbs or supplements. I’ve enjoyed trying new teas which calming qualities.

With patience, persistence, and the right tools, I know you will find your way back to a peaceful life if you aren’t there already.
